Handball, Basketball and Curling!

WE have had a very busy week this week. It was kindness day on Tuesday, allowing students who donated money to wear casual clothes,  the grade 7's had a trip to the Acton Curling club to practice their curling skills, the grand opening of the St. Jude's soccer dome was on Wednesday and the Science fair was held on Friday. Check out what each grade has been up to below:

Grade 4:
We have been practicing our handball skills and we got to actually play our first real game of handball this week. The students showed their understanding of the rules and we even saw a few nice goals scored. Next week we will be continuing our game play to allow the students to demonstrate and apply the lessons and skills we have been learning.

Grade 5:
The grade 5's have also been learning handball. We have been spent a lot of time learning the skills as well as the strategies that help handball teams be successful. The students played their first game of handball this week and displayed a great understanding of how to play defense and how to move to help open up for teammates. W will be continuing our game play next week to allow the students to apply the skills and strategies we have been focusing on in class to a game setting.

Grade 6:
The students have been practicing their basketball skills this week. We started playing our first game of basketball and the students were able to move with the ball and complete good passes.We even had a few students make some beautiful shots. Next week we will be continuing to pay games of basketball in a tournament style to allow the students to demonstrate and apply the skills we have been learning in class.

Grade 7:
The grade 7's went on a curling trip this week to the Acton Curling Club. They got to experience what it feels like to sweep and throw the rocks and we had a few students able to put it in the house from the other end. Our next Curling trip will be Tuesday, Nov. 27. We have also been learning terms and rules of basketball. The students completed a formative assessment of their basketball knowledge and we discussed the meanings of the lines on the court. We then played our first game of basketball, where the students were able to move with the ball and open up for teammates. They also were able t play effective defense and make team strategies for how to be successful.

New Units and New Gym

We started new units of study this week and we spent the week in the new gym facility.

Grade 4:
We started our new study in our unit of invasion games. Our next sport is handball. The students spent time practicing their catching and throwing skills and practiced catching while on the run.

Grade 5: 

The grade 5's started their next sport for invasion games which is handball. We practiced throwing ad catching skills and learned the rules of the sport before ending the week with a game of bucket ball.

Grade 6:

We started our new sport in invasion games this week which is basketball. The students worked on their dribbling skills, trying to maintain control of the ball while moving and their passing skills. The students learned the three main types of passes and played passing games.

Grade 7:

The grade 7's started their new unit of Aesthetic Movement. We will be playing low organizational games and sports that require repeated movements. Our first sport is basketball. The students have been practicing their passing, dribbling and shooting skills. We have also been working on moving with and without the ball and passing ahead of a player to let them run into it. We will continue working on these skills in game situations next week.

Science Fair

Science Fair is coming up on Friday November 16!

Halloween Fun

The students finished up their particular sport this week and will be beginning a new sport next week. They worked hard and showed much improvement over the last few weeks. This week also included some Halloween fun for the students as w played some Halloween games and the students on Wednesday got to take part in Phys. Ed. in their Halloween Costumes.

Grade 4:
We finished our soccer study this week. The students put the skills they have been learning into action by displaying their dribbling, passing and shooting in a tournament. The students were separated into teams and got to participate in a round robin style tournament to display their soccer skills and their teamwork and communication skills. Our next unit of study will be a few weeks on handball, taking place in the new gym facility!

Grade 5:
We finished our soccer study this week. The students put the skills they have been learning into action by displaying their dribbling, passing and shooting in a tournament. They also displayed their knowledge of main strategies like moving to open space and running give and go plays to make opponents miss. The students were separated into teams and got to participate in a round robin style tournament to display their soccer skills and their teamwork and communication skills. Our next unit of study will be a few weeks on handball, taking place in the new gym facility!

Grade 6:
The grade 6 students have been practicing their frisbee skills. We have worked on backhand passes and two hand or pancake catches. The students have learned how to defend and how to attack and put these strategies on display in a round robin style tournament. The students showed terrific growth in their understanding of the rules and by the end of the study were able to play independently and officiate the game amongst themselves without help or arguments. Our next unit will be ball hockey in the new gym facility beginning next week!

Grade 7:
The grade 7 students have been working on their frisbee skills in their invasion games unit as well as finishing up their preliminary fitness tests in order to measure their fitness level at this time. The students then set goals for something fitness related that they would like to accomplish this year and will be working towards achieving our goals throughout the year. We are also starting our new unit of Aesthetic Movement next week! This unit will be about movement patterns and games that require students to display specific movements in order to be successful. This unit will include a study of ball hockey, some time spent on low organizational cooperative games and possibly a dance feature. We will be using the new gym facility next week so come prepared with clean indoor shoes and different shoes to wear outdoors.
